Since Maidan in Kyiv and Russian presence in the Crimea, Ukraine has never been the same. In 2014, the country is deeply divided by the conflict imposed on the Ukrainians. But since nobody actually asked the nation, author Oleksandr Shyshko decided to take matters into his own hands and look for the answer to the ultimate question – who are the Ukrainians and what do they want.

Shyshko spent his time researching the national identity of native Ukrainians, and as he went he stumbled on a discovery that led to yet another question – where is Ukraine going, the so-called Quo vadis? of the Ukrainian people. His findings and critical comments gave birth to this new book that is now for the first time being published in English. To Get Ukraine.

Oleksandr Shyshko is an oxymoron. In the past a formidable example of Homo Sovieticus, Shyshko never stopped learning past 1991 when in the new economic system he was forced to abandon a career in science. Resourceful Shyshko applied himself to a diverse selection of crafts and grew to become a respected figure among his peers both domestically and internationally. Shyshko proved to be a jack-of-all-trades and eventually wrote a manuscript, becoming an author.

The writer makes a noble attempt to inform the reader of the "hows" and "whys" of Ukraine. He does so with some level of subjectivity, but in general, does a good job of trying to present the material even-handedly.
I would recommend this book to those who want to read things from the inside opinion of a Ukrainian and not through the eyes of an ex-pat living there. I learned many things and also reconfirmed some things I already knew. I give the writer 4 out of 5 stars for material depth and details, but did not give him 5 stars due to some rather dry parts of the book. In any case, a book to be read by those who wish to know more about this wonderfully curious country from someone who is actually from there.

TO GET UKRAINE A REPORT FROM INSIDE THE COUNTRY FOR THOSE LOOKING ON FROM THE OUTSIDE eBook Oleksandr Shyshko Reviews

"To Get Ukraine" is Oleksandr Shyshko's personal take on the history, culture and personality of Ukraine. It's his attempt to insure that the rest of the world "gets" - understands - Ukraine. Roughly one-half of the book deals with Ukraine's history from Kyivan Rus right up to last year's Maidan revolution. The rest is concerned with the sociology, politics, economics, demographics and culture of modern Ukraine.

Shyshko takes a very idiosyncratic approach in his book - it's very much his own take on these matters. When he writes about history, I can't fault him very much. He is fair and doesn't sugar coat or romanticize the past. His views, however, are not so palatable when he speaks of the role of women and the dynamics within families. It's best to say that he has an old-fashioned take on such things. But even here, he isn't necessarily wrong. The average Ukrainian (though perhaps from the older generations) probably does think about women and families in a different way than is done in western Europe and North America.

The book is written in a simple and breezy style and the chapters are short and concise, making for a very easy read. Now, Shyshko does loves parenthetical footnotes and I love reading them, but this may not be to everyone's taste. On the whole, Huw Davies does a very good job on the English translation. However, it is obvious that either the translation or the editing was done too quickly. And, perhaps, the translator or editor wasn't really familiar with Ukraine and Ukrainian. When writing about the Second World War, the anti-soviet, anti-nazi nationalist army (UPA in the Ukrainian acronym) is rendered as "Ukrainian Rebel Army" instead of the standard English "Ukrainian Insurgent Army". There are other cases when words are obviously transliterated from Russian rather than Ukrainian. It is very likely that the Shyshko's original was written in Russian, however there should've been an attempt to insure, in the editing phase, that Ukrainian words were transliterated from Ukrainian rather than Russian. Dneiper/Dnipro (for the river) might be debatable, but using 'galushki' instead of 'halushki', "golubtsy" instead of 'holubtsy', 'samogon' instead of 'samohonka' aren't.

Be that all as it may, this is a good, concise overview of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Anyone wishing to know more about the country and its people are well-advised to get this book to get Ukraine.
